2050: Introduction

In the year 2021 a plague hit the earth. Because of obstruction by political groups playing their own agendas, research and treatment of what later proved to be a common retrovirus did not begin until 2025. By that time, in a repeat of historic epidemic of the 1980's, the delays caused by the political game playing had caused the plague to spread worldwide.
Advances in technology found the cause and a way to eliminate it by 2027. The problem was that by the time this happened the plague, and the treatment for this life-threatening virus had rendered nearly ninety percent of the male population sterile. It took until 2030 to develop an effective medical solution to the problem. By 2030 the genome research had confirmed to the great anger of the religious that the origins of homosexuality were purely genetic and in spite of horrendous outcry from religious extremists homosexuality in the mainstream world was no longer thought of as anything other than the state of being and genetic predetermination in the same classification as physical description, hair, skin or eye color as in fact it had been all along.
The solution was the youth of the world, and yet, with the solution there were several problems. The world needed a level of fertility in both males and females that was simply not possible without medical intervention. Multiple births and fertility drugs known to cause them for women were available over the counter. Even with a high percentage of multiple birth pregnancies the plague itself had killed millions, and the years of population loss with little reproduction were severe. With the plague basically controlled and soon to be eradicated meetings between world medical conferences and planners knew that the next and only remaining alternative was the genetic modification of a number of young and fertile males to increase that fertility and reproductive ability to nearly absurd levels. Nature still had a say and no matter what was done a percentage of females would not be able to conceive easily, and a percentage that had been relatively infertile would never have more than a single birth.
The medical conferences came up with a plan.
Males between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five would be chosen for birthing centers. These males would be in service to their various countries as if they had faced military induction. They would receive a full salary for their time in service, and after only four years they would immediately receive full medical and some financial benefits for life. The cost of the genetic modifications would be over three hundred thousand dollars per male. The modifications consisted of a series of injections given over a six-week period. During that six-week period the male would experience initially some heightened libido and that was about it. One more injection would be given between week seven and week eight. By that time, the male would be living at a reproduction center and the genetic modifications done to him would kick in to high gear. One of the problems with the modification to the males was that it created a genetic change shifting their interests to homosexuality. There was no negative impact on the sperm itself, but the modified male would after modification prefer male company. That was a slow process and did not happen immediately.
Some females could, if they desired come in to a repopulation center and have direct insemination performed in the normal way. Though the modified males would remain capable in some ways, the loss of arousal from a female would eventually kick in and their sperm would be machine harvested.
The known side effects were all dealing with the modifications that had to be done to radically increase sperm production. There would be over time after the activation shot a slow physical change that would accelerate as the months wore on. The few test males had experienced large gains in penile and testicular dimensions. Body hair was profuse in all who genetically had hair follicles to grow, and finally muscle and bone mass would increase by as much as three-hundred percent at it's peak which would be at the end of the second year. By the time the young man left the service the mass will have reduced by probably twenty percent. They would still be some of the most massive men ever to inhabit the planet. At the peak of the muscle mass there would be some mobility issues and all of these men would need help with some things that the average population would take for granted. The men may have in some ways been some kind of a warped muscle fantasy, but, for a time these men would lead lives that had to be assisted by others for things such as elimination, hygiene and in a few even eating.
The scientists knew that they had to make things pleasurable as best they could, so the extraction devices used were designed to make the extraction process better than the best sex they ever would have missed out on. The food was first rate for many reasons, but, the nutritional balance was geared to maximize every effect that an athlete even a sexual one would ever need.
Selection of the males was as random as was possible given the circumstances. The males came from all racial and mix backgrounds. They were screened for any form of genetic defect that could re-appear down the blood-line and this was simply as a disease preventative and not engineered for any sinister means. Extremists initially held this up too because they wanted all genetics for homosexuality removed. Based on genetic research all governments universally stated that this would not be the case and that homosexuality would remain in the genetics of the world.
There had been some publicity on what was coming with regards to repopulation and what was needed. While parents wanting to protect their Sons were not happy, the logic of the extreme random sample that this would generate made sense. In addition, all groups agreed that the young men recruited to serve would not be from other branches of the military. It was felt that the disciplined mind of military training would be a great detriment to this program. Those young men who were far more laid back and relaxed with a little bit of "party animal" thrown in would probably be the best candidates.
On January 1, 2031 the first twenty centers were completed in various major cities around the Nation in the United States. In Europe and Asia centers were also being set up for the same purpose.
The medications were being manufactured and it was decided that none of the active recruiting would begin until all of the phase one centers were equipped and staffed with sufficient numbers of people to handle nearly every contingency. Capacity at each center was twenty males and there were housing and medical facilities for these men. In addition there were special rooms and equipment available for actual intercourse when it was possible or desirable.
Special interest groups continued to try and push their own agendas. Some groups catering towards those with abnormally high I.Q.'s demanded screening or enhancement of this characteristic. The religious groups had a list of things that they wanted added and or removed from the genetics of mankind. There were others who wanted modifications to create super soldiers or super athletes, and all of it was repeatedly turned down.
Worldwide governmental health organizations found themselves explaining the same things over and over again to the same people who by genetic definition seemed to be able to talk but unable to listen or understand why a wide variety of people were the most desirable.
As the political wrangling continued, the next problem was that nobody was exactly certain as to the best method of selection.
Many decades before towards the final decade of the twentieth century law enforcement had placed extremely young looking people in High Schools to dig out those committing illegal acts and to stem the trade of illegal drugs. The program was a dinosaur and after thirty years of great cost and only minimal effectiveness it was dropped.
In a recruiting operation of this nature however to assure a random sample and screen out only a few things, the under cover operation was reinstated. Males and females able to blend in were placed in High Schools and Colleges looking for the initial screening group to see what they could do to assure the best possible.
A total of twenty-five would be chosen for each center and this would increase over time with the opening of new centers. The five extra were in fact alternate individuals in case something medical or psychological showed up in the first twenty. They would, if they also qualified by health screening be used in the second group.
It took about three months to get the first group ready for the first ever repopulation centers to be opened in January of the following year.
It was decided to begin the initial stage of injections without the activator before opening, but, from the activator forward the recruit would serve his time completely.
In October of 2030 letters were sent out to all males pre-screened by the undercover observers who were or would be of legal recruitment age by the January 1, opening date.
Worldwide governments also protected the recruits against any foul play by Law. Worldwide the offense of kidnapping or experimenting on any of the recruits during or after their service had ended was deemed a capitol crime for any and all involved and this was automatic and absolute.
It was ruled that these men were being modified to save a world, not to be the beginning of another end to one.
Very soon the first phase would begin.
